Bitcoins auctioned in national first

In a landmark outcome for Victorian law enforcement agencies and the Victorian Asset Confiscation Scheme, almost 25,000 bitcoins confiscated from a convicted drug trafficker were sold last week at auction.

Victoria is believed to be the first jurisdiction in Australia to confiscate and liquidate this form of digital currency under confiscation laws.

Director of Public Prosecutions John Champion S.C. has outlined the process behind settlement negotiations and discontinuances in a speech to the Law Institute of Victoria’s Criminal Law Conference.  “It is only when you understand the process that underpins the decision to prosecute or not, can you best address the issues with which we are presently concerned,” he told lawyers at the annual conference on 27 July.
