DPP appeals backpacker rape sentence

The Director of Public Prosecutions has filed an appeal against the sentence imposed on Alfio Anthony Granata for raping a backpacker multiple times in a Melbourne hotel over a six-week period in 2012.

Granata was sentenced in the County Court on 25 May 2015 to 17 years' imprisonment, with a non-parole period of 13 years. He had pleaded guilty to nine counts of rape, two counts of making a threat to kill, one count of threatening to inflict serious injury, one count of intentionally causing serious injury, and one count of theft.

Acting DPP Gavin Silbert QC lodged the appeal in the Court of Appeal on behalf of the DPP,  on the grounds that the sentence imposed for the rape charges was manifestly inadequate.
