DPP appeals sentence for intentionally causing serious injury

The sentence imposed on a man who repeatedly hit another man in the head with a large garden stake, causing life threatening injuries, will be appealed by the Director of Public Prosecutions.

Steven Kevin Grech pleaded guilty in the County Court on 18 June 2015 to intentionally causing serious injury, and on 20 October was sentenced to 12 months' imprisonment, and a three-year Community Corrections Order.

The court heard that Grech and the victim, who had a broken leg and was carrying a crutch, had a verbal altercation in a Footscray street in the early hours of 22 December, 2013. Grech struck the victim a number of times with the stake until he fell to the ground, suffering a loss of consciousness and potentially fatal head injuries.

DPP John Champion S.C. has lodged an appeal against the sentence on the ground it is manifestly inadequate.
