DPP appeals sentence for murder

The Director of Public Prosecutions John Champion S.C. has lodged an appeal against the sentence imposed on Isac Ayoul Daing for the murder of Maryanne Sikai in her home in March 2014.

Daing pleaded guilty in the Supreme Court to murder, and on 24 August 2015 was sentenced to 18 years and six months' imprisonment, with a non-parole period of 14 years and six months.

Mr Champion has appealed the sentence to the Court of Appeal on the grounds it was manifestly inadequate and that it was not reasonably open to find, in the circumstances, that Daing had a moderate sense of remorse for the murder.
