DPP appeals sentences

The Director of Public Prosecutions has filed appeals against the sentences imposed on Daniel Miftode for rape and Ross Stefan Jurj for rape and sexual penetration of a child under 16.

Jurj was sentenced in the County Court on 25 May 2015 to five years and five months’ imprisonment, with a non-parole period of three years and seven months. He had pleaded not guilty to five counts of rape, and one charge of sexual penetration of a child under 16.

Miftode was sentenced in the County Court on 25 May 2015 to six years and nine months’ imprisonment, with a non-parole period of four years and three months. He had pleaded not guilty to 10 charges of rape.

Acting DPP Gavin Silbert QC lodged the appeals in the Court of Appeal on behalf of the DPP, on the ground that the sentences imposed were manifestly inadequate.
