DPP applies to High Court for special leave to appeal decision

The Director of Public Prosecutions has applied to the High Court for special leave to appeal against a Court of Appeal decision in the matter of Yavaz Kilic.

Kilic pleaded guilty in March 2015 to intentionally causing serious injury for dousing his then girlfriend in petrol and shortly afterwards setting her on fire. She suffered life endangering injuries, and in light of her injuries and her long term prognosis, she terminated a 12-week pregnancy. Kilic also pleaded guilty to using a prohibited weapon without exemption, and dealing with suspected proceeds of crime.

Kilic was sentenced in the County Court to a total of 15 years' imprisonment, with a non-parole period of 11 years.

On appealing the sentence, the Court of Appeal on 8 December 2015 re-sentenced Kilic to 10 years and 10 months' imprisonment, with a non-parole period of seven years and six months.

On 4 January 2016, DPP John Champion S.C. filed an application with the High Court for special leave to appeal this decision.
