John Cain begins in new role

Senior executive and lawyer John Cain today begins in the role of Solicitor for Public Prosecutions (SPP) in Victoria.

Mr Cain brings to the role his combined experience in law and public sector management.

He began his legal career at Maurice Blackburn as an articled clerk in 1982 and forged his legal career at the firm over the next 20 years. After working as a solicitor for four years, he was appointed a partner at Maurice Blackburn in 1987 and then Managing Partner from 1991 to 2002.

He was then Chief Executive Officer at the Law Institute of Victoria for four years; the Victorian Government Solicitor from 2006 to 2011; and then a Managing Partner at Herbert Geer (now Thomson Geer).

Director of Public Prosecutions John Champion S.C. said he was looking forward to the contribution Mr Cain will make to the Victorian criminal justice system and the OPP.

Mr Champion thanked Vaille Anscombe for her leadership as Acting SPP over the past nine months.

“I thank Vaille for her professional conduct throughout her time in the role, and for the advice and support she has provided to me,” he said.

The SPP manages the staff and budget of the OPP, which prosecutes the most serious crimes committed in Victoria including murder, culpable driving, sexual offences, fraud, drug trafficking, organised crime and serious assault. Crown Prosecutors, OPP Solicitor Advocates and external barristers are briefed by the SPP, on behalf of the DPP to prosecute these matters.
