Senior Crown Prosecutor appointed Chief Judge

The Director of Public Prosecutions John Champion S.C. today welcomed the appointment of Peter Kidd S.C. as the Chief Judge of the County Court of Victoria.

"Peter has made an outstanding contribution to the Victorian criminal justice system and he is highly deserving of this appointment," Mr Champion said.

"Peter has always been willing to share his knowledge and expertise, and the manner in which he has conducted his work has been exemplary and with the utmost respect for others.

"It gives me great pleasure to congratulate Peter on his appointment and I wish him well as he continues to serve the State of Victoria in this vital role."

Chief Crown Prosecutor Gavin Silbert QC said Peter had made an immense contribution to Crown Prosecutors' Chambers since he joined in February 2009.

"Peter has had a stellar career. After a busy practice at the Victorian Bar from 1995 to 2005, and time spent as a prosecutor at the War Crimes Chamber in Bosnia and Herzegovina, we were very pleased when Peter accepted the Crown Prosecutor appointment and joined us in Chambers. Since then, he has been appointed Senior Counsel in November 2011 and  Senior Crown Prosecutor in July 2013.

"Peter is a very competent, black letter lawyer who can turn his hand to trials and appeals, and he has regularly appeared before the Court of Appeal.

"He is a highly respected member of Crown Prosecutors' Chambers who has competently prosecuted complex legal cases, including appearing before the full bench of the High Court of Australia, and who has always remained approachable and willing to share  his knowledge with his colleagues and younger lawyers.

"I wish him all the best with his significant appointment as Chief Judge."
