Trafficking heroin sentence appealed

A prison term handed to a man convicted of trafficking a commercial quantity of heroin has been appealed by the Director of Public Prosecutions John Champion S.C.

Uyen Thi Phuong Thai pleaded guilty in the County Court to trafficking a large commercial quantity of a drug of dependence, and was sentenced to four years and four months’ imprisonment, with a non-parole period of three years.

Thai was charged with being involved in the trafficking more than 2.3 kgs of heroin from interstate to Victoria over a four-month period from 8 June 2014 and 9 October 2014.

Mr Champion appealed the sentence and non-parole period on the basis they were manifestly inadequate.
