Acting DPP appeals sentence for multiple child sex offences

The Acting Director of Public Prosecutions Gavin Silbert QC has lodged an appeal against the sentence imposed on a man for multiple child sex offences.

In April 2016, the man was sentenced in the County Court to seven years’ imprisonment with a non-parole period of five years, for sexual offences against three of his grandchildren. He had pleaded guilty to two charges of incest, two charges of indecent act with a child under 16 years and a single charge of use of a carriage service to offend.

In December last year, the County Court increased the offender’s total effective sentence and non-parole period each by one year after he pleaded guilty to further sexual offences against a separate grandchild. This included four charges of incest and three charges of indecent act with a child under 16 years.

Mr Silbert has lodged an appeal in the Court of Appeal against the sentence imposed and order made in December on the grounds that some of the individual sentences, and the new total effective sentence and non-parole period, were manifestly inadequate.
