DPP John Champion S.C. appointed Supreme Court Judge

Attorney-General Martin Pakula today announced the appointment of Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) John Champion S.C. as a judge of the Supreme Court of Victoria.

Mr Champion has served as the head of Victoria’s public prosecutions service since being appointed to the role in November 2011.

Mr Pakula said Mr Champion’s experience as DPP will make him an invaluable asset for the Supreme Court of Victoria.

Speaking on behalf of all Office of Public Prosecutions (OPP) staff, Solicitor for Public Prosecutions John Cain congratulated Mr Champion on his appointment and thanked him for his outstanding service to the criminal justice system and the Victorian community.

“As DPP, Mr Champion has been a strong advocate for protecting the integrity and independence of the prosecution service in Victoria,” Mr Cain said. “He has provided great support to me and to staff at the OPP, and we wish him well in his new role.”

Chief Crown Prosecutor Gavin Silbert QC thanked Mr Champion for his work as DPP and as a member of the Director’s Committee.

“I congratulate him on his well-deserved elevation to the role of Supreme Court Judge and wish him all the best for the future,” Mr Silbert said.

Mr Silbert will be acting in the role of Director until a new DPP is appointed early next year.
