DPP appeals sentence for murder of Kenneth Handford

The Director of Public Prosecutions John Champion S.C. has lodged an appeal against the sentence imposed on a man for the murder of 89-year-old Victorian war veteran Kenneth Handford.

Jonothan Jeffrey Cooper was sentenced in the Supreme Court on 21 April 2017 to 16 years’ imprisonment, with a non-parole period of 13 years.

He had pleaded guilty to one charge of murder, one charge of aggravated burglary and one charge of theft.

Mr Champion has appealed the sentence to the Court of Appeal on grounds including that the sentence imposed for each of the charges is manifestly inadequate and that the order for cumulation is manifestly inadequate.
