Kerri Judd QC appointed Senior Crown Prosecutor

The appointment of  Kerri Judd QC as a Senior Crown Prosecutor is an outstanding outcome for the prosecution of serious crime in Victoria, Director of Public Prosecutions John Champion S.C.said today.

"As a Senior Crown Prosecutor Ms Judd will be advising on, and appearing in, the most complex and serious criminal prosecutions in Victoria, and she is eminently qualified to do so," Mr Champion said.

"I congratulate Ms Judd on her appointment and look forward to the continuing contribution she will make to criminal prosecutions in Victoria as a Senior Crown Prosecutor."

Chief Crown Prosecutor Gavin Silbert QC also welcomed the appointment, highlighting Ms Judd's experience in criminal law.

"Ms Judd is one of the few leading Senior Counsel with extensive criminal law experience, and will be an excellent addition to the ranks of Senior Crown Prosecutor," Mr Silbert said.

Ms Judd has an extensive trial and appellate practice in the superior jurisdictions, and  has regularly appeared in Royal Commissions, inquiries and compulsory examinations. Since 2013, she has advised and appeared for the State of Victoria before the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse on various aspects including criminal justice issues.

After completing a Bachelor of Laws at Melbourne University in 1987, Ms Judd was admitted to practice law in Victoria in 1989 and was an Associate to the Hon Justice Gray and then the Hon. Justice Crockett.

She signed the Bar Roll in 1991 and has appeared in an extensive array of appellate proceedings in the High Court and the Court of Appeal, and for the prosecution and defence in a number of significant criminal trials.

She took a leave of absence for a year in 1995-96 to work as a senior legal officer at the Central Australian Aboriginal Legal Service in Alice Springs.

She was appointed Senior Counsel (now Queens Counsel) in November 2007.
