SPP John Cain appointed Victorian State Coroner

Director of Public Prosecutions Kerri Judd QC has congratulated Solicitor for Public Prosecutions John Cain on being appointed as the Victorian State Coroner and a County Court Judge.

The appointment was announced today by the Attorney-General Jill Hennessy, effective as of 2 December 2019.

Ms Judd commended Mr Cain on his leadership at the OPP over the last four years.

She said, “Mr Cain has been instrumental in his work with victims, technology and staff wellbeing. He has led our response to the Royal Commission into the Management of Police Informants. He has finalised the refurbishment of 565 Lonsdale Street and overseen the relocation of Crown Prosecutors’ Chambers”.

“On a personal note, I am grateful for John’s assistance since having been appointed Director.  I could not have carried out my responsibilities in this role over the last 18 months without his wise counsel and support.”

Ms Judd said Mr Cain’s skill set is perfectly suited to leading the Coroners Court and contributing to the reduction of the number of preventable deaths and fires and the promotion of public health and safety.

Prior to joining the OPP in November 2015, Mr Cain was Managing Partner at Herbert Geer (now Thomson Geer). He was the Victorian Government Solicitor from 2006 to 2011 and Chief Executive Officer at the Law Institute of Victoria for five years.

Mr Cain began his legal career at Maurice Blackburn as an articled clerk in 1982 and forged his legal career at the firm over the next 20 years. He was appointed a partner at Maurice Blackburn in 1987 and then Managing Partner from 1991 to 2002.

As SPP, Mr Cain has been responsible for managing the staff and budget of the OPP, which prosecutes the most serious crimes committed in Victoria including murder, culpable driving, sexual offences, fraud, drug trafficking, organised crime and serious assault. Crown Prosecutors, OPP Solicitor Advocates and external barristers are briefed by the SPP, on behalf of the DPP to prosecute these matters.

Mr Cain will finish in the role of SPP on 29 November.
