Senior Crown Prosecutor and Crown Prosecutor Appointed

Director of Public Prosecutions, Kerri Judd QC, has welcomed the appointments of Diana Piekusis QC as Senior Crown Prosecutor and Victorian barrister Grant Hayward as Crown Prosecutor.

Ms Judd said both appointments were well-deserved.

“Ms Piekusis has made an outstanding contribution to Crown Prosecutors’ Chambers for 10 years. This appointment recognises both her legal ability and leadership skills,” she said.

“Mr Hayward brings with him a wealth of experience, having regularly appeared for both prosecution and defence, including for the Crown in the prison riot prosecutions.”

Chief Crown Prosecutor Brendan Kissane QC said both appointments are welcome additions to Chambers.

“I congratulate Ms Piekusis on her senior appointment and I look forward to welcoming Mr Hayward to Chambers,” Mr Kissane said.

Ms Piekusis was appointed a Crown Prosecutor in 2009, after six years as a barrister at the Victorian Bar. During her time in Chambers she has appeared in an extensive number of appeals, trials and pleas in the High Court of Australia, Court of Appeal, Supreme Court and County Court.

She was appointed silk in November 2018.

Mr Hayward was admitted to practice law in 2000 after studying arts and law at Northern Territory University. He practiced as a solicitor for the Northern Territory Director of Public Prosecutions before moving to Victoria in 2002 to take up a position with the Office of Public Prosecutions.

He joined the Victorian Bar in 2010, and has practiced almost exclusively in criminal law, regularly appearing in a number of pleas, trials and appeals before the Children’s Court, County Court and Supreme Court.
