Two Senior Crown Prosecutors and a Crown Prosecutor appointed Senior Counsel

Senior Crown Prosecutors Ray Gibson and Fran Dalziel, and Crown Prosecutor Diana Piekusis have today been appointed Senior Counsel for Victoria.

Director of Public Prosecutions Kerri Judd QC and Chief Crown Prosecutor Brendan Kissane QC welcomed the appointments.

“Being appointed Senior Counsel is recognition of their outstanding contribution to the criminal justice system and the Victorian community,” Ms Judd said.

Mr Kissane said having three appointments to Senior Counsel from Crown Prosecutors’ Chambers was a fantastic achievement.

“It says a lot about the status of Crown Prosecutors’ Chambers that the Chief Justice has made these three appointments in the one go,” Mr Kissane said.

“Individually, they each deserve this recognition of their hard work and service. They have each worked on major cases and shown leadership and commitment through their work.”

Mr Gibson was appointed a Senior Crown Prosecutor in July this year, and had previously served as a Crown Prosecutor for 14 years between 2002 and 2016. In this time he headed the Specialist Sexual Offences Unit, was the Crown Prosecutor for Geelong and the Western District, and conducted many complex trials in the Supreme and County Courts involving murder, police corruption and serious sex offences.

Ms Dalziel was also appointed a Senior Crown Prosecutor in July after serving as a Crown Prosecutor since 2012. She has appeared in some of the most difficult trials and appeals and has made significant contributions to the Court of Appeal practice, trial practice, including in the Supreme Court.

Ms Piekusis was appointed a Crown Prosecutor in 2009, after six years as a barrister at the Victorian Bar. During her time in Chambers she has appeared in an extensive number of appeals, trials and pleas in the High Court of Australia, Court of Appeal, Supreme Court and County Court.

Appointments to Senior Counsel are made by the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Victoria.

A ceremonial sitting of the Supreme Court to welcome the new silks will be held in the Banco Court on Thursday, 13 December.
