The Policy and Specialised Legal Division publishes the Director of Public Prosecutions' (DPP) Prosecution Policies. These policies provide guidance on a range of issues to the people involved in the prosecution of indictable matters, for example Office of Public Prosecutions (OPP) solicitors, Crown Prosecutors and counsel at the private bar.
Regular reviews and updates of the policies take into account changes to the law which may affect them. When the need for a new policy is identified, the Policy and Specialised Legal Division researches and drafts a policy for discussion and signoff with the DPP.
It also liaises with relevant external agencies in relation to legislation and policy issues which may affect the criminal justice system in Victoria. It often prepares written submissions on behalf of the OPP and DPP in relation to law reform, and when new legislation is enacted it manages the process of implementing that legislation within the OPP.
