About the Office of Public Prosecutions Victoria

The Office of Public Prosecutions (OPP) comprises the Solicitor for Public Prosecutions and a staff of solicitors, legal executives and legal support and administrative staff. The Office of Public Prosecutions works for the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).

The head of the OPP is the Solicitor for Public Prosecutions, who is an independent statutory officer appointed by the Governor in Council. Craig Hyland is the Solicitor for Public Prosecutions.

Matters prosecuted by the DPP and the OPP involve serious crimes or matters that are of significance to the fair and effective operation of the Victorian criminal justice system. In particular, the DPP prosecutes cases involving:

  • all homicides
  • corruption cases involving police or lawyers
  • major sex offence cases
  • major drug cases, including all drug trafficking cases
  • major fraud cases
  • major occupational health and safety matters involving death or serious injury
  • Court of Appeal and High Court cases
  • proceeds of crime
  • bail applications and applications concerning breach of sentence.

The OPP also supports the prosecution of serious offences by a range of other agencies, including WorkCover, VicRoads, Consumer Affairs Victoria, the Environment Protection Authority and various state government departments.
