Media Release - 8 October 2008 - Joshua Maynard
The Victorian Director of Public Prosecutions, Mr Jeremy Rapke QC, today confirmed that he has filed an appeal in the Victorian Court of Appeal against the inadequacy of the sentence imposed on Joshua Andrew Maynard in the County Court at Geelong on 10 September.
Joshua Maynard pleaded guilty to one count of armed robbery, one count of rape, one count of aggravated burglary, one count of indecent assault and one count of recklessly causing serious injury.
Joshua Maynard was sentenced to a total effective sentence of 6 years imprisonment with a non-parole period of 4 years.
Announcing his decision to appeal against the sentence, Mr Rapke said, “After careful consideration, I have reached the view that the sentence passed in this particular matter does not sufficiently reflect the seriousness of the offending. Furthermore, I have been troubled by the recent sentencing trends in respect of the crime of rape and have decided to raise this issue as a separate ground of complaint in the appeal. As the appeal has now been filed in the Court of Appeal Registry, it is inappropriate to say more about the matter at this stage.”
