DPP appeals sentence imposed on Codey Herrmann

The Director of Public Prosecutions Kerri Judd QC has lodged an appeal against the sentence handed down to Codey Herrmann for the rape and murder of Aiia Maasarwe.

Herrmann was sentenced in the Melbourne Supreme Court to 36 years’ imprisonment, with a non-parole period of 30 years.

The Director has appealed to the Court of Appeal on the following grounds:

  • The learned sentencing judge erred by finding that Verdins principles operated to reduce the respondent’s moral culpability and the need for general and specific deterrence.
  • The individual sentences, the total effective sentence and the non-parole period are manifestly inadequate in all the circumstances.
