The Policy and Specialised Legal Division publishes the Policy of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) for Victoria. This policy provides guidance on a range of issues to the people involved in the prosecution of indictable matters, for example Office of Public Prosecutions (OPP) solicitors, Crown Prosecutors and counsel at the private bar.

Regular reviews and updates of the policy take into account changes to the law which may affect them. When the need for an update to the policy is identified, the Policy and Specialised Legal Division researches and drafts amendments for discussion and signoff with the DPP.

It also liaises with relevant external agencies in relation to legislation and policy issues which may affect the criminal justice system in Victoria. It often prepares written submissions on behalf of the OPP and DPP in relation to law reform, and when new legislation is enacted it manages the process of implementing that legislation within the OPP.
